”Sweet Oblivion” is the sixth studio album by Screaming Trees, released on 8 September 1992. Notably, it became the band’s best-selling record, marking their closest approach to mainstream success. Bolstered by the band’s biggest hit, “Nearly Lost You,” the album achieved sales exceeding 300,000 copies. The success of the song was further amplified by its inclusion in the Top Ten, platinum-selling soundtrack of the film “Singles,” which featured various prominent Seattle-based music acts.
During the album’s recording, the original drummer Mark Pickerel departed to explore other musical avenues, leading to Barrett Martin stepping in as the replacement. Following “Sweet Oblivion,” there was a notable gap of almost four years before the release of the band’s subsequent album, “Dust.” This extended break impacted the band’s commercial momentum significantly.
