In 1973, Cymande solidified their place in music history with the release of “Second Time Round”. As children of the Windrush Generation, they were pioneers of the emerging Black British music scene, drawing from their Guyanese and Jamaican heritage to create a unique fusion of reggae bass lines, Afro-tinged Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic rock elements, and American funk instrumentation, which they termed “Nyah-rock.”

Recorded after a successful US tour with Al Green, “Second Time Round” followed their self-titled debut and further endeared them to an American audience. Their debut had already made history as the first UK soul album to chart on Billboard, and “Second Time Round” repeated this success, propelling them back onto the US charts. Additionally, Cymande made history as the first British band to grace the stage of the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem.
