Graceland is the sound of one man’s creative rebirth. A rhythm-soaked journey that found Paul Simon halfway across the world and halfway back to himself.

Released on 25 August 1986, Graceland was born from collapse: a floundering career, a failed marriage, and a bootleg tape of South African street music that sparked something deep in Simon’s soul. What followed was a bold musical pilgrimage, recording in Johannesburg with mbaqanga musicians amid the tension of apartheid, layering their grooves with zydeco, doo-wop, Tex-Mex, and pop to craft something far greater than cultural collage.

From the buoyant accordion of “The Boy in the Bubble” to the celestial chants of “Homeless” (with Ladysmith Black Mambazo), the album pulses with an energy that feels both ancient and modern. “You Can Call Me Al,” driven by Bakithi Kumalo’s miraculous, backward-looped bassline, became an unexpected hit. Its surreal lyrics and jubilant brass masking something quietly existential. Even in its most playful moments, Graceland is always searching.

Simon doesn’t just borrow from other musical traditions; he sits inside them, writing with humility and reverence. He calls the record a spiritual journey, and it shows. In the title track’s emotional precision, in “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” in the way joy and grief meet over an aching chord change.

Controversial at the time for crossing the cultural boycott of South Africa, Graceland sparked debate, but it also became a commercial and critical triumph, selling over 16 million copies and winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. Decades on, it’s not just an album that helped popularise “world music”; it’s one that expanded what pop music could be.
