You Won’t Get What You Want is the final statement from Daughters, a record that sounds less like a comeback than a controlled detonation. Released on 26 October 2018 via Ipecac Recordings, it stands as the band’s fourth and last studio album, and their only full-length following their 2013 reformation. Rather than easing themselves back in, Daughters returned with an album that confronts the listener head-on, unflinching and deliberately uncomfortable.

The record’s power lies in its restraint as much as its brutality. Everything is pushed to the edge, but nothing spills over accidentally. Percussion pounds with a mechanical menace, guitars scrape and coil rather than riff, and Alexis Marshall delivers vocals that feel more like psychological pressure than performance. The tension rarely resolves, instead tightening track by track, daring the listener to sit with the unease rather than escape it.

The rollout hinted at this intent. “Satan in the Wait”, released on 13 July 2018, announced both the album and the band’s signing to Ipecac with a slow-burning dread that set the tone. “The Reason They Hate Me”, unveiled on 17 August 2018, sharpened that edge further, noisier and more abrasive, framed by Marshall as a critique of critique itself. By the time “Long Road, No Turns” arrived on 2 October 2018, the album’s sense of inevitability was clear: this was music designed to close in rather than open out.

Critics responded accordingly. The album was met with universal acclaim and quickly became one of the most talked-about releases of 2018. It appeared across countless year-end lists, praised for its vivid production, uncompromising compositions, and suffocating atmosphere. Rather than inviting repeat listens through comfort or familiarity, You Won’t Get What You Want commands attention through force of intent, each track engineered to dominate rather than persuade.

As a final chapter, it feels definitive. There is no sense of compromise or nostalgia here, only a band pushing their sound to its most extreme and focused form. Daughters did not return to soften their legacy or reframe it. Instead, they left behind an album that refuses resolution, a brutal, consuming work that lingers long after it ends.
