There is a warmth running through Woodface that feels hard-won. After the darker, more inward cast of Temple of Low Men, Crowded House’s third album arrives with a sense of renewal, driven not just by stronger light, but by the sound of old creative bonds being rediscovered.

That shift begins with Tim Finn’s presence. What started as sessions between the Finn brothers for a separate project ends up reshaping Woodface entirely, giving the album a collaborative spark that defines its character. Eight songs are co-written by Neil and Tim, and their harmonies become one of the record’s great pleasures, not simply polished, but instinctive, as though the songs were built around the natural fit of their voices.

The result is an album that feels more open and optimistic than its predecessor. That is not to say it lacks emotional depth, only that it carries its feeling with greater ease. There is a buoyancy here, a melodic confidence that gives even the more reflective moments a sense of lift.

The singles map that range beautifully. ‘Fall at Your Feet’ and ‘It’s Only Natural’ underline the album’s gift for direct, elegant songwriting, while ‘Weather with You’ and ‘Four Seasons in One Day’ bring a more playful, atmospheric touch. Even ‘Chocolate Cake’, with its sharper edge, fits the broader mood of a band sounding looser and more willing to stretch.

Instrumentally, Woodface leans towards acoustic guitar and rich vocal interplay, moving away from the heavier organ textures of earlier records. That helps give the album its clarity. There is little here that feels cluttered. Instead, the arrangements allow the melodies to breathe, and the songs benefit from that space.

Critically, the record’s reputation is easy to understand. The songwriting is exceptionally strong, and the sense of shared purpose gives the album a cohesion that feels natural rather than imposed. It sounds like a band enjoying the act of making music together, and that pleasure is infectious.

Commercially, Woodface proved a major success in Australia and New Zealand, while also delivering the band their first top ten album in the UK. Its standing has only deepened with time, recognised as one of the most significant records in their catalogue.

What makes Woodface endure is not just the quality of its songs, but the spirit behind them. This is an album built on reunion, trust and the freedom that comes when collaboration sharpens rather than dilutes a voice. It is Crowded House at their most generous, melodic and complete.
