Released on 29 September 2008 via BBE and Rapster, WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip is a vibrant, guest-heavy showcase from Madlib and the final chapter in BBE’s celebrated Beat Generation series. Framed like a pirate radio broadcast beamed straight from Madlib’s imagination, the album plays as a loose, free-flowing transmission – part beat tape, part MC summit, part psychedelic soul revue.

Rather than centring on one singular collaborator, Madlib curates a rotating cast that includes Guilty Simpson, MED, Talib Kweli, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Oh No and more. The result is a kaleidoscopic listen that moves effortlessly between dusty boom-bap, cosmic funk, deep soul loops and left-field skits, all stitched together with Madlib’s unmistakable crate-digger aesthetic.

The production is characteristically raw yet richly textured: off-kilter drums, warped samples, warm basslines and fragments that feel pulled from forgotten vinyl treasure troves. There is a looseness to the sequencing that mirrors the feel of late-night radio – tracks drift in and out, moods shift quickly, and nothing feels overly polished or constrained.
