By the time Wish arrived in spring 1992, The Cure were no longer the shadowy outsiders of their Pornography years — they were, improbably, one of the biggest bands in the world. Riding the wave of Disintegration’s grand melancholy, Robert Smith and co. delivered an album that balanced stadium-sized euphoria with the ache of emotional fragility. It became their most commercially successful record, debuting at No. 1 in the UK and No. 2 in the US, yet still sounded unmistakably like The Cure: wistful, skewed, and gloriously human.

Opening with High, the album sets the tone with a dizzy optimism — Smith’s featherlight vocals gliding over Boris Williams’ crisp drums and a swirl of detuned guitars. Friday I’m in Love, a happy accident of pitch-shifting, remains one of the purest pop moments in their catalogue, shimmering with a joy so bright it almost blinds. Yet Wish never loses its bruised heart: Apart aches with distance, A Letter to Elise finds beauty in resignation, and To Wish Impossible Things lingers like the ghost of a goodbye.

Smith described the record as a search for “feeling of abandon,” citing Chapterhouse’s Mesmerise and The Human League’s Human as unlikely touchstones. That duality — dreamlike abandon and electronic sheen — runs through the album’s DNA, captured perfectly by the band’s layered guitars, feedback loops, and carefully controlled chaos.

Critics at the time recognised Wish as both a culmination and a turning point. Rolling Stone called it “the only kind of optimism that makes sense,” while Pitchfork later hailed it as one of the band’s most finely balanced records — tender and raucous in equal measure. Thirty years on, the newly remastered edition reveals just how detailed its world still is: from the cathedral reverb of From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea to the whispered heartbreak of Trust.

Wish isn’t just The Cure’s most successful album — it’s their most human. It captures love and loss not as opposing forces, but as patterns in the same storm.
