With Welcome Home, Hellyeah delivered not only a new chapter in their heavy metal journey but also a poignant farewell to one of the genre’s most iconic drummers, Vinnie Paul. Released on 27 September 2019, this album became the last to feature Paul, who tragically passed away in 2018. As a tribute to the founding member, Welcome Home blends the raw energy and groove-heavy sound that Hellyeah are known for, with an undercurrent of emotion that imbues the record with a sense of finality.
The album’s lead single and title track, “Welcome Home,” was released in May 2019, accompanied by a compelling music video that set the tone for the rest of the album. The track is quintessential Hellyeah – a thunderous blend of heavy riffs and Chad Gray’s commanding vocals, with a nod to their past while pushing their sound forward. As the title suggests, it feels like a homecoming, both for the band and the fans who have supported them through the years.
Despite Vinnie Paul’s absence, the band brought in Stone Sour’s Roy Mayorga as their touring drummer, filling the monumental shoes left behind. The rhythm section remains tight, particularly on tracks like “Black Flag Army” and “Oh My God,” both of which were accompanied by music videos that showcased the band’s signature intensity. “Perfect,” another standout, was released in August 2019, further building anticipation for the album’s full release.
Welcome Home balances the heavy and the emotional, providing a fitting homage to Paul’s legacy while ensuring the band’s sonic identity remains intact. The album was well-received by critics, with Wall of Sound awarding it 7/10, noting the solid offering and speculating on what the future may hold for the band. Kerrang! awarded it 4/5, praising it as “a wonderful time” and the perfect farewell to a metal hero. Loudwire also recognised the album’s impact, naming it one of the 50 best rock albums of 2019.
For Hellyeah, Welcome Home represents more than just another record – it is a testament to the spirit of the band and the undying influence of Vinnie Paul. It may mark the end of an era, but the music continues to resonate with power and purpose.
