George Ezra’s debut album Wanted on Voyage is an accomplished, feel-good collection that showcases the British singer-songwriter’s blend of infectious melodies and rich, soulful vocals. Released on 30 June 2014, it quickly became a defining moment in Ezra’s career, gaining widespread recognition and critical acclaim. The album’s roots lie in a month-long train journey across Europe, which inspired much of the material and gave it a sense of wanderlust and discovery.
The album’s production, handled by Cam Blackwood, brings out the warmth and charm in Ezra’s deep baritone, with a mix of folk, rock, and indie pop influences. Tracks like “Did You Hear the Rain?” and “Cassy O'” bring a refreshing energy, while “Budapest” became a breakout hit, topping the charts in multiple countries and becoming a staple of radio airplay. Its irresistible rhythm and Ezra’s expressive falsetto made it a chart-topping success, peaking at number three in the UK and number one in Austria and New Zealand.
At the heart of Wanted on Voyage is a deep, personal connection to Ezra’s experiences. His lyrics, born from his travels and interactions with diverse cultures, have an infectious sense of wonder. The album’s title, a playful nod to Paddington Bear’s suitcase sticker, reflects that same sense of adventure and longing for new experiences.
Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive. Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph praised the album’s joyful energy, describing it as “an uncynical, joyous release” and highlighting Ezra’s dynamic vocal range. Similarly, Kitty Empire of The Observer noted that Ezra brought a refreshing edge to romantic themes, adding a subtle darkness to the otherwise lighthearted tracks. Meanwhile, AllMusic highlighted the album’s diversity, calling it an enjoyable mix of “scrappy romps” and “quirky, synth-laden indie pop tunes.”
Ezra’s commercial success was equally impressive. The album debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and, after a few months, climbed to number one, where it remained for four weeks. By the end of 2014, Wanted on Voyage had sold over 678,000 copies in the UK, making it the third-best-selling album of the year. Its appeal didn’t stop there—by April 2015, it had sold nearly a million copies in the UK and went on to sell over 1.24 million copies by 2018.
Overall, Wanted on Voyage introduced George Ezra as one of the most exciting voices in British music. With its catchy hooks, timeless charm, and heart-on-sleeve lyrics, it remains a refreshing and enduring debut album.
