On 11 August 2023, British electronic outfit Jungle released their fourth studio album, Volcano, under Caiola Records and AWAL. This highly anticipated follow-up to their 2021 project, Loving in Stereo, was preceded by a series of captivating singles, including “Candle Flame,” “Dominoes,” “I’ve Been in Love,” and “Back on 74.” Accompanying the album, Jungle also unveiled a full-length film of the same name exclusively for their fan club members, further enhancing the immersive experience for their audience. The band is currently touring across Europe and North America, with plans to extend their reach to Australia in 2024.

The creation of Volcano was deeply intertwined with the band’s tour for Loving in Stereo, showcasing their dynamic evolution as artists. The writing process took place on the road, and recording commenced in an Airbnb in Los Angeles before transitioning to the iconic Metropolis Studios in London. Drummer Josh Lloyd described the album as “the most honest record [the band has] made,” emphasising its soulful roots and organic progression. He noted that Volcano represents a freer sound, bursting with explosive energy and a spontaneity that marks a departure from their previous work.

Critically, Volcano has been met with widespread acclaim. With a Metacritic score of 81, indicating “universal acclaim,” it has captivated critics and listeners alike. Robin Murray from Clash lauded the album, suggesting that Jungle’s soulful essence rivals that of esteemed contemporaries like Sault, and characterised the work as a “focussed, unified return” that blends homage with innovation. Ed Lawson of DIY described it as “more breezy bops than all-out summer smashes,” yet acknowledged its rich and warm sonic landscape.

The eclectic nature of Volcano shines through in its blend of genres, drawing on disco, soul, and hip-hop influences. Thomas Smith from NME highlighted the album’s experimental cocktail of sounds, which encapsulates the carefree spirit of summer, while simultaneously noting the band’s reluctance to fully reveal themselves. Mojo praised Volcano for its continuity with Loving in Stereo, while Uncut remarked on its energetic flow and expanded musical palette.

Volcano stands as a testament to Jungle’s artistic growth and sonic versatility. It not only reaffirms their position in the contemporary music scene but also invites listeners to embark on a vibrant auditory adventure. As they continue to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories, Jungle proves that they are not just musicians but innovators in the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music.
