Some records feel like discoveries rather than releases. U.S. Music with Funkadelic, issued in 2009, belongs firmly in that category, a collection of early 1970s recordings that plays less like an archive and more like a missing chapter finally restored.

At its core, the album documents George Clinton’s first attempt to expand the P-Funk universe. United Soul, a group of young musicians from Plainfield, New Jersey, are placed at the centre, with input from members of Funkadelic shaping the sound around them. The result is not a side project in the usual sense, but something more fluid, a collaboration that blurs the line between band and collective.

Garry Shider’s presence is key. Having already contributed vocals to Maggot Brain in 1971, he brings a sense of continuity to these sessions, his voice anchoring the material even as it stretches outward. Tracks like ‘Baby I Owe You Something Good’ and ‘I Miss My Baby’, originally released as a standalone single in 1972, carry that unmistakable blend of grit and warmth that defined the era, equal parts raw and refined.

What is striking is how complete the album feels. Despite its piecemeal origins, these recordings do not come across as leftovers or sketches. There is a cohesion here, a sense that United Soul and Funkadelic were already circling something fully formed. Later reinterpretations of these songs across the Parliament-Funkadelic catalogue only reinforce that idea, but here they feel immediate, still in the process of becoming.

There is also a sense of transition woven throughout. Following these sessions, Shider and fellow United Soul members Larry and Cordell Mosson would fold into the wider Parliament-Funkadelic orbit, their influence extending into future releases. In that context, U.S. Music with Funkadelic functions as both origin story and bridge, connecting early experimentation with what would soon become a defining sound.

Critically, the album has been recognised for exactly that. Not as a collection of curiosities, but as a fully realised record, short perhaps, but rich in intent.

More than anything, it stands as proof that the P-Funk universe was never built in isolation. It was collaborative from the outset, shaped by voices and ideas moving in and out of focus. U.S. Music with Funkadelic captures that process in motion, a snapshot of something just before it fully crystallised.
