”Transformer” stands as the second solo studio album by American artist Lou Reed, released November 1972, produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson under RCA Records. Recognised as a pivotal work in the glam rock genre, it featured the hit single “Walk on the Wild Side,” exploring themes of sexual orientation, gender identity, prostitution, and drug use. This influential album marked Reed’s transition from a niche artist to an international star, with noteworthy tracks like “Perfect Day” and “Satellite of Love.”

Reed’s Velvet Underground roots were evident, with several songs originating from the band’s era. “Andy’s Chest” and “Satellite of Love” were reworked for the album, showcasing a slowed-down tempo. The influence of artist Andy Warhol remained strong, inspiring the creation of the song “Vicious” after Warhol suggested writing about someone vicious.

Mick Ronson, of Bowie’s Spiders from Mars, played a significant role in the album’s production, contributing as a co-producer, session musician, and arranger. The album’s success elevated Reed’s status from a cult figure to an acclaimed international artist. The iconic cover art, an over-exposed Mick Rock photograph, became synonymous with the album.

“Walk on the Wild Side” became a global hit despite its controversial themes, securing its place as Reed’s signature tune.

In reviews, while some critics praised the stimulating sexuality expressed in songs like “Satellite of Love,” “Vicious,” and “Walk on the Wild Side,” others noted Reed’s capacity for even more potent music. Nevertheless, “Transformer” received lasting acclaim, ranking on various lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2018, a book by musician Ezra Furman dedicated to “Transformer” was published by 33⅓.
