Third Eye Blind, the debut studio album by the American rock band of the same name, was released on 8 April 1997, via Elektra Records. The album, written collectively by Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan, was produced by Jenkins and Eric Valentine. Recorded in San Francisco at Toast Studios, Skywalker Ranch, and H.O.S., the album blends alternative rock, post-grunge, and power pop influences. Thematically, it delves into topics like relationships, drug addiction, suicide prevention, and the band’s experiences with a major record label. Five singles were released to promote the album: “Semi-Charmed Life,” “Graduate,” “How’s It Going to Be,” “Losing a Whole Year,” and “Jumper.”

The album explores themes of loss, addressing subjects such as suicide, crystal methamphetamine addiction, and sexual abuse. “Semi-Charmed Life,” characterised by its alternative rock sound and rap-influenced vocal style, was one of the first songs recorded for the album. While it focuses on crystal methamphetamine addiction, Jenkins suggests it also reflects broader life transitions.

Regarding the band name and album title, Jenkins aimed for a name with “wit and a sense of punk-rock irony.” “Third Eye Blind” refers to a metaphysical third eye, though it’s also intended as satire. The album’s art direction was handled by Alli and Ro-Starr, with the latter creating the band’s “falling man” logo. The album cover, shot by Christine Alicino in San Francisco, features model Shandra Boatwright. Alicino aimed for an expressive aesthetic, achieved through Boatwright’s bright red lipstick and dark eyeliner.

The album’s initial US pressing featured a sepia-toned cover, limited to around 500,000 copies. However, subsequent pressings featured different colour schemes, including a red-toned cover and a cyan, negative photo cover for the Japanese release. The 20th anniversary edition presents a black-toned cover. Jenkins clarified in 2022 that the sepia-toned cover was the intended artwork, altered by Elektra Records for a more attention-grabbing appearance.
