Homeboy Sandman has never been one to follow trends. For over a decade, the Queens MC has carved out his own lane, pairing razor-sharp lyricism with a restless creative energy. His latest EP, There In Spirit, produced entirely by Detroit’s Illingsworth, is set for release on 25 February via Mello Music Group.
The first taste of the project, “Keep That Same Energy,” is a no-nonsense cut that calls out fakery with Sandman’s signature wit. Illingsworth’s production is theatrical and buoyant, providing the perfect backdrop for his effortless flow.
Coming off the back of Don’t Feed The Monster (produced by Quelle Chris) and Anjelitu (crafted by Aesop Rock), There In Spirit continues Sandman’s streak of collaborating with producers who push his artistry forward. His admiration for Illingsworth is clear: “Illingsworth beats are a particular, one-of-a-kind sonic energy that my molecular structure responds to in a way it could never respond to anything else,” he explains. “Illingsworth is one of the greatest producers to ever live. Anyone who denies that is completely in denial.”
This project isn’t just another release—it’s a statement. A call to break free from mediocrity and embrace authenticity. If “Keep That Same Energy” is any indication, There In Spirit is set to be another standout moment in Homeboy Sandman’s ever-evolving catalogue.
