Ali Farka Touré’s The Source is a masterclass in West African guitar tradition, filtered through a blues sensibility that never once feels derivative. Released in 1992 and reaching the top of the Billboard World Albums chart, this LP stands as a defining statement of Touré’s artistic vision — rich, rhythmic, and resonant with soul.

Across ten tracks, Touré blends desert blues, folk motifs and traditional Malian textures into something wholly his own. Opener Goye Kur lays the groundwork with interwoven electric and acoustic guitars, while Hawa Dolo challenges the expected blues form, pushing toward more expansive melodic lines. The intricate solo instrumental Cinquante Six is a standout — a flamenco-tinged reverie that draws a line from the Sahel to southern Spain.

The record also showcases a cast of collaborators, including Taj Mahal on Karaw and Mahini Me, and tabla flourishes from Nitin Sawney on Inchana Massina. But it’s Touré who remains front and centre — his voice earth-worn, his playing effortlessly fluid.

The Source isn’t just a cultural bridge. It’s a personal testament from one of Mali’s great musical figures — as meditative as it is technically precise, and as timeless as the land that shaped it.
