The Smiths released their debut studio album on 20th February 1984 through Rough Trade Records. Initially recorded between September and November 1983 at Pluto and Strawberry Studios in Manchester, as well as Eden and Matrix Studios in London, the album underwent production changes after initial sessions with producer Troy Tate were deemed unsatisfactory. John Porter was brought in to re-record the album during breaks in the band’s UK tour.
Upon release, the album received positive reviews and achieved commercial success, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart and staying on the chart for 33 weeks. Internationally, it peaked at number 45 on the European Albums Chart and remained on the chart for 21 weeks. The album’s impact established The Smiths as significant figures in the 1980s UK music scene.
The iconic album cover features American actor Joe D’Allesandro, sourced from Andy Warhol’s film “Flesh,” and was designed by the band’s vocalist Morrissey. It included notable tracks like “What Difference Does It Make?” which peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.
Notably, “This Charming Man,” a track absent from the original UK vinyl release, was later included on subsequent releases, such as US versions and later reissues worldwide.
The album’s legacy includes critical acclaim, with retrospectives and rankings listing it among the greatest albums of the 1980s and all time. It remains a cornerstone of alternative rock, showcasing Morrissey’s lyrical wit and Johnny Marr’s distinctive guitar work, supported by the production efforts of John Porter.
Personnel on the album included Morrissey on vocals, Johnny Marr on guitars, Andy Rourke on bass guitar, and Mike Joyce on drums, with additional contributions from Paul Carrack on piano and organ, and Annalisa Jablonska providing backing vocals on selected tracks.
Certified Gold in the UK, the album’s enduring popularity underscores its lasting impact on music culture.
