Nu metal’s golden era wasn’t short on intensity, but The Sickness hit like a sledgehammer through suburban drywall. Disturbed’s debut was a snarling, savage jolt of precision riffing, industrial stomp, and primal rage — led by a frontman whose guttural “ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah” would become a generational battle cry.

David Draiman didn’t sing so much as seethe, whisper, and roar through tracks like “Stupify” and “Voices”, digging into paranoia, isolation, and inner torment with a theatrical snarl. But it was “Down with the Sickness” — with its tribal drums, twitching riffs, and unrelenting aggression — that truly etched the band into the public’s consciousness. For better or worse, it became an anthem, despite (or perhaps because of) its controversial spoken-word bridge, which still sparks debate.

There’s an undercurrent of self-awareness and emotional rawness to The Sickness that gave it an edge over many of its nu-metal peers. “The Game” and “Fear” lean into catharsis rather than empty angst, while Johnny K’s production keeps the sound crisp, metallic, and brutally efficient.

This isn’t a subtle record. It was never meant to be. But The Sickness became a cultural touchstone — for gym playlists, wrestling entrances, and cathartic teenage outbursts alike. It was Disturbed’s foot in the door, and they kicked it wide open.

25 years later, it’s still pulsing through speakers and punching holes in drywall.
