The Sick, The Dying, And The Dead!

“The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!” stands as the sixteenth studio album by the American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on 2 September 2022, under frontman Dave Mustaine’s Tradecraft label via Universal. This album marks several significant points in the band’s history. It is the debut of drummer Dirk Verbeuren, the final album featuring guitarist Kiko Loureiro, and the first studio release in six years since “Dystopia” (2016), constituting the lengthiest gap between two studio albums in Megadeth’s career. The production of the album was a collaborative effort between Mustaine and Chris Rakestraw.
The journey to create “The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!” commenced in 2019 but encountered various setbacks, including Mustaine’s diagnosis of throat cancer in the same year and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In 2021, Megadeth parted ways with longtime bassist David Ellefson due to sexual misconduct allegations. This led to the removal and subsequent re-recording of his bass parts by Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio. James LoMenzo, a former Megadeth bassist, rejoined the band following the album’s completion.
Receiving predominantly positive reviews, the album was praised for continuing the trajectory established by “Dystopia.” It debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 and achieved Megadeth’s highest chart positions worldwide, reaching No. 1 in Finland, No. 2 in Australia, Poland, Switzerland, and Scotland, and No. 3 in the UK, among others. The lead single, “We’ll Be Back,” garnered a nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
