A quiet confidence runs through The Secret of Us. Where her debut leaned into intimacy as a shield, this second record feels more exposed, more open, and ultimately more assured. Gracie Abrams is still writing from the same emotional centre, but here, she lets those thoughts breathe a little louder.

Working again with Aaron Dessner, Abrams refines a sound that sits somewhere between indie pop, folk and country pop. The arrangements remain understated, but they carry more shape this time. There is a sense of movement beneath the surface, subtle shifts in tone that mirror the emotional push and pull of the lyrics.

That emotional core is the album’s strength. Abrams writes with a diaristic clarity, unpacking heartbreak, insecurity and the small, complicated details of relationships. Tracks like ‘Risk’ capture that tension perfectly, balancing frenetic energy with a lingering melancholy, while ‘Close to You’ feels more immediate, almost instinctive, its origins stretching back years yet landing here with renewed purpose.

There is also a growing sense of scale. The presence of Taylor Swift on ‘Us’ is less about spectacle and more about alignment, a natural extension of Abrams’s influences rather than a defining moment. The collaboration fits seamlessly into the album’s tone, reinforcing rather than distracting.

Musically, The Secret of Us resists grand gestures. Even when it edges towards something bigger, hints of dancefloor euphoria or fuller production, it rarely commits fully. That restraint gives the record its cohesion. It feels like a collection of thoughts captured in real time, rather than something overly constructed.

At times, that approach can leave certain moments feeling slightly underdeveloped. There are stretches where the songwriting feels more like a sketch than a finished idea. Yet even then, the sincerity carries it through. Abrams’s voice, soft but direct, keeps the focus firmly on the emotional intent.

Commercially, the album marks a clear step forward, debuting at number one in the UK and number two on the Billboard 200, while a deluxe edition later extended its reach further. But beyond the charts, it is the sense of growth that stands out.

The Secret of Us does not reinvent Abrams, nor does it try to. Instead, it sharpens what was already there. It is a record about learning to sit with uncertainty, to find clarity in the mess of it all. And in doing so, it quietly confirms her as one of the most compelling voices in her space.
