Jordan Rakei’s fifth studio album is a masterclass in quiet reinvention. Known for slipping between styles with ease, he threads familiar textures with fresh surprises, creating something warm, widescreen and assured. His first release with Decca feels ambitious in its cinematic sweep, yet it keeps the intimate softness that makes his work so magnetic.

The Loop plays best as a whole. “Flowers” opens with delicate romance, setting a soulful tone that Rakei deepens with hazy distortion and suspended chords on “Miracle.” His sultry vocal is understated but commanding, a guide through gentle passages that never drift into background music.

“Friend or Foe” nudges toward the mainstream with accessible, radio-ready rhythms, yet the palette remains rich. Hints of funk, jazz and gospel arrive as colours rather than costume changes, adding depth without showboating. The second half quietly steals the record. “Hopes and Dreams” and “Learning” are lush and expansive, their repeating figures pulling focus to storytelling, while subtle flares in the vocal line reveal how much power Rakei can summon without breaking the spell.

Closer “A Little Life” earns its length, layering sumptuous harmonies into a thoughtful resolution that lingers. Polished but never overworked, musically diverse but coherent, The Loop is an uninhibited, soul-baring statement from an artist who can devastate and seduce in a single breath.
