Roger Waters sits at the emotional and authorial centre of The Final Cut, a Pink Floyd album whose group identity is already starting to fracture. Written entirely by Waters and sung almost entirely by him, the record pushes the political grief and personal history of The Wall into an even starker space. Richard Wright was no longer in the group, David Gilmour’s role had diminished and relations inside the band were badly strained. That isolation is audible: the music often feels less like a collective performance than a private argument staged at orchestral scale.

The project began partly from material left over from The Wall and was initially conceived around the film version, but the 1982 Falklands War redirected Waters’s writing. His anger focused on what he saw as the betrayal of the post-war hopes associated with the generation that had fought fascism, including his father, who died during the Second World War.

Recording took place from July to December 1982 at several London studios and Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire, with Waters, James Guthrie and Michael Kamen producing.

The arrangements are often restrained enough to make sudden eruptions feel severe. Waters can sing in a near-whisper before the music expands into brass, strings, guitar or martial sound effects. Gilmour takes the lead vocal on “Not Now John”, the notable exception, and his guitar remains capable of cutting through the dense emotional atmosphere. Nick Mason’s contribution was reduced in places largely to sound effects. The friction was not merely thematic: Gilmour objected to the quality of some material inherited from The Wall sessions, intensifying the dispute over the album’s direction.

Released on 21 March 1983, The Final Cut reached number one in the UK and number six in the US, though at the time it was Pink Floyd’s lowest-selling studio album since Meddle. It also became Waters’s final Pink Floyd studio album. The record can be austere, but that is central to its appeal. It is less interested in spectacle than in memory, disappointment and the moral afterlife of war. Where earlier Floyd albums often built imagined worlds, this one keeps dragging the listener back to history.
