By 1986, Talk Talk were already restless. Having outgrown the slick synth-pop sheen that had defined their early years, Mark Hollis and producer Tim Friese-Greene sought something richer, more human. The result was The Colour of Spring – an album that traded sequencers for soul, replacing cold circuitry with the warmth of guitar, piano and organ. It marked the band’s turning point, bridging the hook-laden immediacy of It’s My Life with the textural, near-spiritual landscapes that would define their later masterpieces.

Recorded with a host of guest musicians – including Steve Winwood’s unmistakable Hammond organ and Robbie McIntosh’s guitar flourishes – The Colour of Spring radiates an organic confidence. Opener Happiness Is Easy builds from delicate percussion into something both meditative and euphoric, while Life’s What You Make It surges with primal rhythm and unfaltering optimism. Living in Another World stretches further, an expansive, hypnotic track that feels almost transcendent in scope. Even in its quieter moments – the melancholic I Don’t Believe in You or Time It’s Time – the album never loses its sense of purpose or grace.

Critics recognised its maturity immediately. Mojo and Q both praised its craft and warmth, while Uncut later called it “a stunning achievement”, awarding it 9/10. Commercially, it became Talk Talk’s biggest success, reaching No. 8 in the UK and topping the Dutch charts, carried by the strength of its two hit singles.

Nearly four decades on, The Colour of Spring still sounds like revelation – the moment Talk Talk shed their pop skin and discovered something timeless beneath. It’s lush yet restrained, introspective yet full of life. An album that breathes, thinks, and – most importantly – feels.
