Brand New
The Brand New Heavies diverged from the high-tech, neo-soul trend of their contemporaries in Britain’s late ’80s/early ’90s soul scene.
While acts like Soul II Soul and Lisa Stansfield embraced modern technology, the Heavies opted for a more traditional approach, favouring real instruments over synthesisers. Drawing inspiration from ’70s R&B and disco, influenced by bands like the Average White Band and Tower of Power, they crafted a retro sound that celebrated classic R&B.
Fronted by the expressive N’Dea Davenport, standout tracks like “Dream Come True” and “Stay This Way” showcased the band’s soulful style, complemented by authentic horn sections. Despite critical acclaim, particularly for tracks like “People Get Ready” and “Put the Funk Back in It,” the album struggled to gain traction on American urban contemporary radio, remaining a cult favourite.
