On Sunset Blvd., Yancey Boys deliver a debut that feels purposeful rather than precious. Released on 29 October 2013 via Yancey Media Group in conjunction with Delicious Vinyl, the album is built around a cache of previously unheard beats by the late J Dilla. Instead of treating that material as untouchable artefact, Illa J and Frank Nitt approach it as living music, placing warmth, movement and collaboration at the centre.

The record brings together a carefully chosen cast of Dilla affiliates and kindred spirits. Posdnuos of De La Soul, T3 of Slum Village, Common, Slimkid3 of The Pharcyde and Talib Kweli all appear, alongside DJ turns from Rhettmatic, C Minus and J Rocc, plus verses from Guilty Simpson and vocals from Eric Roberson. The guest list reads like a roll call, but the album never buckles under it. Each voice is given space to serve the mood rather than the mythology.

At its core, Sunset Blvd. is about forward motion. Illa J and Frank Nitt formed Yancey Boys with a clear purpose: to honour Dilla’s legacy without freezing it in time. Frank Nitt, who grew up with Dilla and now curates his catalogue, has spoken about the beats being future-facing rather than nostalgic, and that perspective shapes the album’s tone. The production feels relaxed and confident, while the performances lean into joy, familiarity and craft.

Critics responded to that balance. Reviews highlighted the album’s refusal to dwell in grief or reverence, instead finding energy in its ease and generosity. There is a sense of Friday night optimism running through the record, one that frames Dilla’s beats not as relics but as foundations. Even when tracks trace back to earlier eras of his work, they land with clarity and freshness in 2013.

The album’s release was preceded by the single “Quicksand”, issued on 27 August 2013 and featuring Common, with “Fisherman” on the B side. Together, they set the tone for what followed: respectful, rooted and alive.

Sunset Blvd. succeeds because it understands that legacy is not preserved by caution. By trusting the strength of the music and the community around it, Yancey Boys made a debut that feels celebratory, generous and, most importantly, present tense.
