Sticky Fingers has the feel of a band settling into danger rather than merely performing it. The Rolling Stones had entered the 1970s with Mick Taylor established alongside Keith Richards, and their ninth studio album makes the most of that expanded guitar language. Blues, country and hard rock sit beside songs that are darker, slower and less easily categorised. The famous original Andy Warhol-designed sleeve, complete with a working zip, advertised provocation; the music inside is more varied and more musically disciplined than the image alone suggests.

Recorded across several sessions in 1969 and 1970, including work at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, Olympic and Trident in London and Mick Jagger’s Stargroves home, the album was produced by Jimmy Miller. It was also the first Stones studio album without Brian Jones and only the second full-length release to feature Taylor. Around the core band, musicians including Bobby Keys, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston, Ian Stewart and Jack Nitzsche added saxophone and keyboards, broadening the arrangements without turning them into ornament-heavy productions.

“Brown Sugar” opens with one of Richards’s most immediate riffs, while “Wild Horses” pulls almost completely in the opposite direction, its country shading and spacious arrangement allowing vulnerability to emerge. “Bitch” is all clipped guitar and horn-driven momentum. Elsewhere, the album stretches further: the long middle section of “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” lets the band move into a loose, extended groove, and “Dead Flowers” brings a deliberately rough-edged country feel. The range makes the record feel lived-in rather than stylistically tidy.

Sticky Fingers was the first album issued on the band’s own Rolling Stones Records label, a business change that coincided with an unusually assured creative period. It is easy to hear only the swagger because the Stones were exceptionally good at it, but the quieter qualities are just as important: Charlie Watts’s restraint, the space between guitar parts, the way keyboards subtly alter a song’s emotional colour. The album endures because its looseness is underwritten by attention. It sounds casual only because the musicians know exactly how much they can leave out.
