Simple Minds step out of the neon shimmer of New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) and into floodlights with Sparkle in the Rain — a bold, big-shouldered pivot that swaps filigree for force. With Steve Lillywhite tightening the screws, the band’s freshly road-tested muscle snaps into place: Mel Gaynor’s drums thunder, Charlie Burchill’s guitars arc across the skyline, and Mick MacNeil’s keys punch bright, churchy stabs that leave plenty of room for Jim Kerr to preach hope and hunger.
