Released on 27 September 2019 via Albert’s Favourites, Sonkei marks the debut full-length from Tokyo collective Rōnin Arkestra, a record that feels less like an introduction and more like a fully realised statement of intent. Following their earlier EP First Meeting, the group arrive here with a sound that is already assured, expansive and deeply collaborative.

Led by Mark de Clive-Lowe, the project draws together musicians from across Japan’s jazz and electronic scenes, forming a kind of roaming ensemble in the truest sense of its name. The idea of the rōnin, masterless yet highly skilled, is not just thematic. It is embedded in the music itself, where individual virtuosity is consistently channelled into something collective.

Sonkei builds its identity from the fusion of 1960s spiritual jazz and experimental electronica. It opens with Lullabies of the Lost, a meditative piece that sets the tone with quiet authority, before Onkochishin introduces a sharper edge, driven by breakbeat rhythms and improvisational interplay. From there, the album moves fluidly between states, never settling, always evolving.

There is a narrative quality to the record, inspired by episodes from Samurai Champloo. Tracks like Elegy of Entrapment expand on earlier material, deepening their emotional and sonic scope, while Cosmic Collisions stands out as a moment of pure momentum, its 3/4 groove carrying a natural, almost gravitational pull. Tempestuous Temperaments closes the album with weight and intensity, underlining the group’s ability to handle complex rhythms with ease.

What distinguishes Sonkei is its balance. There is space for reflection and restraint, but also for energy and release. Horns glide through calmer passages, while electronic textures and drums push the music into more frenetic territory. The transitions feel organic, guided by instinct rather than structure.

This is a record built on trust. Each player contributes without overreaching, allowing the music to breathe and take shape in real time. The result is a cohesive yet unpredictable journey, one that captures the essence of spiritual jazz while pushing it into new terrain.

Sonkei does not present itself as a debut in the traditional sense. It feels lived in, confident and quietly ambitious. A meeting of musicians that sounds less like an experiment and more like something that was always meant to happen.
