With Some of It Was True, The Menzingers leaned further into reflection without abandoning the grit that has long defined them. Released on 13 October 2023 via Epitaph Records, the band’s seventh studio album felt like a conscious pause, a moment to take stock of where they stood after years of writing songs that aged alongside their audience.

The rollout hinted at that shift early on. “There’s No Place in This World for Me”, shared on 18 July 2023, arrived with a sense of weary honesty, its video filmed at Sonic Ranch grounding the song in lived-in surroundings. When the album was formally announced a month later, “Hope Is A Dangerous Little Thing” reinforced the impression that this was a record more interested in observation than confession. By the time “Come On Heartache” appeared in September, the shape of the album was clear: familiar themes of longing and resilience, viewed from a slightly wider lens.

Guitarist and vocalist Greg Barnett described Some of It Was True as a pivotal moment for the band, shaped by the freedom that comes from fans growing alongside them. That perspective ran through the record. Rather than centring solely on their own lives, The Menzingers stepped into other people’s stories, finding meaning in small details and shared experiences. It gave the songs a broader emotional reach, without sacrificing intimacy.

Critically, the album was met with generally favourable responses, praised for its grounded songwriting and sense of place. Reviewers noted its street-level poetry and Americana touches, populated by everyday imagery and faded dreams, hallmarks that have always sat comfortably within The Menzingers’ world.

Some of It Was True did not chase reinvention. Instead, it refined what the band already did well, trading youthful urgency for something more considered and quietly affecting. It sounded like a group comfortable with who they were, and confident enough to tell stories that extended beyond themselves.
