Sleeping With Ghosts

Sleeping with Ghosts is the fourth studio album by Placebo, a British alternative rock band. Recorded from late 2002 to early 2003, it was released on 1 April 2003 by Virgin and Hut Records. The album, which incorporates elements of alternative rock, electronic rock, and post-punk, was produced by Jim Abbiss.

The album explores themes of relationships, reflecting on both the turmoil and nostalgia associated with past romantic experiences. Lead vocalist Brian Molko, known for his admiration of Sonic Youth, referenced their album Sister in the lyrics of “Plasticine”. He described the album as a personal exploration of past emotional experiences, using songwriting as a therapeutic outlet.

Sleeping with Ghosts debuted at number 11 on the UK Albums Chart and received positive reviews from critics. It includes notable tracks such as “The Bitter End” and “Special Needs”, each exploring different facets of human connection and intimacy.

Accompanied by singles like “The Bitter End”, “This Picture”, and “Special Needs”, Sleeping with Ghosts marked Placebo’s last album under the Hut label. The album’s artwork and photography were overseen by Jean Baptiste Mondino, contributing to its distinctive visual identity.

In subsequent years, Sleeping with Ghosts achieved various certifications across Europe, including Gold in Austria, Belgium, and Germany, as well as Double Platinum status in France. It remains a significant part of Placebo’s discography, known for its introspective lyrics and blend of musical styles.
