By the time Skinty Fia landed on 22 April 2022, Fontaines D.C. were already one of the most compelling bands to emerge from Dublin in decades. But their third album, produced once again by Dan Carey, felt like a shift—subtler, darker, and steeped in a deepened sense of identity. It marked their first UK and Irish number one, yet still bristles with the unease of a band at odds with their newfound visibility.
The album’s title, an old Irish curse translating to “the damnation of the deer”, nods to something ancient and lost—fitting for a record haunted by themes of dislocation, heritage, and cultural erosion. From the opening track “In ár gCroíthe go deo”, which turns a Church of England controversy into a defiant, elegiac hymn, it’s clear the band aren’t playing to the gallery. These are songs of subtle rebellion and wounded pride.
While their earlier work was defined by post-punk fervour, Skinty Fia leans into murkier textures. Echoes of XTRMNTR-era Primal Scream and the rhythmic pull of Roni Size bleed through the arrangements. Yet it’s never derivative—just restless. “Big Shot”, written by Carlos O’Connell, explores the ego’s slow inflation in the wake of success. “I Love You”, meanwhile, is Fontaines’ most overtly political moment to date—anguished, conflicted, and unafraid to bare its teeth.
The band’s evolution hasn’t gone unnoticed. NME called it “a breathtaking collection”, while Pitchfork praised its quiet existential weight, and The Guardian highlighted its refusal to rely on obvious hooks or past glories. Across the board, the record was heralded as a bold progression, culminating in Brit Award wins, Ivor Novello nominations, and a year-end Top 10 finish across several major publications.
Skinty Fia doesn’t explode—it seeps. It’s a record made in the shadows of lockdown, shaped by the pressures of visibility, and carried by the quiet defiance of a band unwilling to let success define them. Fontaines D.C. aren’t just holding their ground—they’re redrawing the map.
