Released on 23 April 2001, the album’s blend of laid-back electronica, silky vocals and lush arrangements resonated widely, peaking at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart and lingering there for an impressive 56 weeks. A Mercury Prize nomination soon followed, confirming its status as a standout of the era.

Across tracks like Destiny and In the Waiting Line, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker craft music that feels intimate yet expansive — a swirl of gurgling synths, shimmering strings and gently hypnotic rhythms. Critics largely praised Simple Things for its rich textures and soulful execution. AllMusic called it “an accomplished slice of soulful genius that rewards frequent spins,” while Rolling Stone dubbed it “chill-out music with a little something for your mind as well.” Not all were convinced — Pitchfork found it a little too close in spirit to Moon Safari — but for many, Simple Things struck just the right balance between atmosphere and craft.
