Jayda Guy, known as Jayda G, seamlessly blends her academic pursuits with her musical artistry, striving to make listeners reconsider their relationship with the world around them. In 2018, the Canadian musician completed a master’s thesis exploring the effects of chemicals on endangered West Coast orcas, while also launching a talk series featuring young scientists. As a DJ and producer, she has carved out a niche in the “Canadian Riviera” scene, delivering some of the most euphoric disco house sounds while fostering an atmosphere for cathartic, electronic device-free dancing.

Following a string of well-received EPs and singles on esteemed labels like 1080p and Geography Records, Significant Changes marks Guy’s debut album. The nine tracks reflect her diverse influences, blending Chicago house, soul, disco, and 1990s R&B, but this time, her references to the natural world are more pronounced. Bookended by an intro (“Unifying the Center (Abstract)”) and outro (“Conclusion”) reminiscent of a scientific paper, the album conveys an underlying ecological urgency that permeates the music.

Guy’s desire to merge her passions is palpable, often transforming field recordings into poignant melodies. The instrumental highlight “Orca’s Reprise” weaves the cries of these majestic marine mammals into its fabric without veering into new-age sentimentality. Meanwhile, “Missy Knows What’s Up” elevates the concept by sampling the sobering words of Canadian biologist Misty MacDuffee, set against a pulsating rhythm that underscores the gravity of her message.

Yet, Significant Changes is not solely a reflection on ecological concerns. Guy adeptly balances its more serious themes with infectious, four-on-the-floor anthems. Those familiar with her festival sets or decade-spanning radio mixes will appreciate her knack for timeless tracks that resonate deeply with audiences. From the funk-infused grooves of War’s “Slippin’ Into Darkness” to the smooth vibes of TLC’s “Creep,” her selections are designed to incite head-bobbing and limb-pumping joy. Frequent collaborator Alexa Dash lends her soulful voice to the euphoric tracks “Sunshine in the Valley” and “Leave Room 2 Breathe,” perfectly complementing Guy’s shuffling beats and vintage drum-machine sounds.

On this album, however, it’s Guy’s own voice that takes centre stage. Her captivating spoken-word vocals feature prominently on “Stanley’s Get Down (No Parking on the DF)” and “Move to the Front (Disco Mix),” both addressing dancefloor etiquette with a playful touch. “I see you with your phone looking at Instagram,” she admonishes in the former, while the latter serves as an empowering call to the women “all the way in the back,” showcasing her infectious charisma.

The album’s title carries a dual significance, representing both the most-used phrase in her thesis and the personal and artistic transformations she has undergone while navigating life changes and performances worldwide. Guy acknowledges the responsibilities that accompany her growing platform, from reducing her carbon footprint to creating diverse and inclusive spaces for learning and dancing.

Significant Changes is not just an album; it’s a celebration of connection, both human and environmental, delivered through joyful melodies and infectious rhythms. Jayda G continues to lead by example, proving that music can inspire reflection and action in equal measure.
