“Scorpion,” the fifth studio album by Canadian rapper and singer Drake, was unveiled on 29 June 2018, under the banners of Cash Money Records, Republic Records, and Young Money Entertainment. A behemoth of a release, “Scorpion” is a double album, boasting an impressive 25 tracks. This musical opus is a multifaceted creation; its first disc delves into hip-hop, while the second disc takes a delightful detour into the realms of R&B and pop.

Steering the creative helm, Drake himself serves as the executive producer, a role he shares with his long-time collaborator, 40, and his manager, Oliver El-Khatib. “Scorpion” opens its doors to a range of guest artists, including luminaries like Jay-Z and Ty Dolla Sign, as well as posthumous contributions from Michael Jackson and Static Major.

Lyrically, the album is a testament to Drake’s enduring themes. He lyrically navigates claustrophobia, delves into the intricate landscape of relationships, and unfailingly celebrates his journey from an underdog to a towering figure in the music industry.

Turning to the musical tapestry, “Scorpion” is a rich tapestry that weaves together influences from multiple genres. Here, you’ll find elements of soul, ambience, quiet storm, R&B, pop, electronica, and trap all in harmonious coexistence.

“Scorpion” arrived with an entourage of hit singles, including “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” “I’m Upset,” “Don’t Matter to Me,” “In My Feelings,” “Nonstop,” and “Mob Ties.” These chart-toppers made waves on the US Billboard Hot 100, with an impressive trio of number ones: “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” and “In My Feelings.”

The album broke records right out of the gate. On its first day of release, “Scorpion” captured Spotify’s one-day global record for album streams, amassing a staggering 132.45 million streams. It didn’t stop there, as it went on to smash Apple Music’s single-day record with 170 million streams, besting Drake’s own previous record set by “More Life.”

Critically, “Scorpion” received a mixed bag of reviews. While individual tracks garnered praise for their quality, the sheer length of the album drew criticism. Regardless, it made a powerful impact commercially, debuting atop the US Billboard 200 with 732,000 album-equivalent units, 160,000 of which came from pure sales. By January 2019, “Scorpion” had earned a shiny five-times platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The accolades rolled in, with “Scorpion” securing five nominations at the 2019 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. “God’s Plan” further shone by clinching the Best Rap Song award. Drake’s “Scorpion” emerged as the Top Billboard 200 Album at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, cementing its status as a powerful force in the world of music.
