Originally released in 1981, Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires remains a pivotal work in the dub genre, showcasing the innovative prowess of Scientist. The album received a digital remastering by Greensleeves Records in 2001, as part of their Reggae Classics series, allowing a new generation to experience its haunting brilliance.

Produced and arranged by the legendary Henry “Junjo” Lawes, the album features the impeccable musicianship of The Roots Radics Band, recorded at the iconic Channel One studio and mixed at King Tubby’s studio, where the alchemy of dub truly flourished.

Scientist’s creative ingenuity is evident as he crafts his unique mixes from tracks by notable artists such as Michael Prophet, Wailing Souls, Johnny Osbourne, and Wayne Jarrett. The album’s standout cuts include “Voodoo Curse,” a hypnotic reimagining of Wailing Souls’ “Oh What a Feeling,” and “Dance of the Vampires,” which transforms Michael Prophet’s “You Are a No Good” into an eerie sonic landscape. Each track presents a masterclass in rhythm and atmosphere, maintaining a dark and immersive vibe throughout.

Interestingly, several tracks from this album, including “Dance of the Vampires” and “The Mummy’s Shroud,” found new life in the world of gaming, featuring prominently in the soundtrack for the beloved video game Grand Theft Auto III. The fictional radio station K-Jah, with its irreverent DJ comments, brought Scientist’s sound to the forefront of popular culture, demonstrating the timeless appeal of his work.

Despite facing legal challenges concerning royalties from Greensleeves Records, Scientist’s legacy endures. The US court’s ruling highlighted the complexities of music ownership, reinforcing Lawes’ role as the copyright holder, yet it cannot overshadow the significance of Scientist’s contributions to the genre.

In Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, listeners are treated to a captivating journey through the depths of dub, where atmospheric soundscapes and potent rhythms collide. This album not only cements Scientist’s status as a dub pioneer but also serves as a haunting reminder of the genre’s power and allure.
