Rid of Me stands as the second studio album by English singer-songwriter PJ Harvey, hitting the shelves on 26 April 1993, under Island Records. Released approximately a year after her acclaimed debut Dry (1992), this album showcased a more intense and aggressive side of Harvey’s songwriting.

Performed by Harvey’s trio, including Rob Ellis on drums and backing vocals, and Steve Vaughan on bass guitar, the songs were recorded by Steve Albini. The album marked the final collaboration of this trio before disbanding in late 1993. Rid of Me earned widespread critical acclaim, earning a spot as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and, indeed, of all time. It claimed position 153 on the 2020 version of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (up from 406 in the previous edition).

PJ Harvey’s first two albums were closely connected in their creation. Following the release of her debut single “Dress” in October 1991, Harvey signed with Too Pure and moved to London. The positive reception led to major labels vying for her, and she eventually signed with Island Records in February 1992. In March 1992, Too Pure released Dry, her debut album, distributed by Island. The band toured extensively, but the constant touring took a toll on Harvey’s health, leading to a nervous breakdown. During her recovery in October 1992, she worked on the songs that would become Rid of Me.
