On their self-titled debut, PUP barrel onto the punk scene with a ferocity that’s impossible to ignore. Released on 8 October 2013 (and reissued on 8 April 2014), PUP captures the band’s transformation from their earlier folk-tinged demos into a full-throttle, cathartic punk powerhouse.
Right from the opening moments of Guilt Trip, it’s clear PUP aren’t the band they were a year earlier. The guitars snarl, the drums thunder, and Stefan Babcock’s vocals hit with raw, ragged intensity. The track’s themes of manipulation and release set the tone: this is a record where personal chaos becomes collective catharsis.
Reservoir channels mid-20s frustration into a noisy, anthemic blur — muddy guitars, pounding drums, and Babcock’s unfiltered scream forming a perfect storm. It’s punk as both therapy and exorcism. Elsewhere, Mabu turns a eulogy for a beloved family car into one of the album’s most joyful, hook-laden moments, while Never Try slows the pace, revealing unexpected melodic depth and emotional weight.
The album isn’t afraid to shift gears. Yukon stands out as a slow-burn, near-ballad inspired by wild camping trips, its sprawling structure and explosive guitar crescendos hinting at prog-rock ambition. Tracks like Dark Days and Back Against The Wall return to pure, high-energy punk, with riffs and choruses built to shake venues to their foundations. Even Lionheart, light on meaning but heavy on fun, delivers its “ba-ba-ba-dap-ba” refrain with infectious charm.
Not every track lands with equal force — Cul-De-Sac treads more familiar breakup-song territory — but it’s hard to dwell on that when the album closes with Factories, a twisted murder ballad that ends with a noose and one last blast of unhinged punk defiance.
PUP is the sound of a band finding their voice and screaming it from the rooftops. It’s messy, emotional, and exhilarating — everything a debut punk record should be.
