Sade’s music is often described in terms of smoothness, but Promise is more interesting when you listen to what sits beneath that surface. The arrangements are spacious and meticulously controlled, yet the songs keep returning to jealousy, longing, romantic uncertainty and emotional imbalance. Sade Adu rarely needs to raise her voice to make those tensions clear. The band’s restraint creates the pressure around her.
The second Sade album was recorded between February and August 1985, mainly at Power Plant Studios in London with a two-week period at Studio Miraval in Provence. The group reunited with the production team behind Diamond Life, including Robin Millar, Mike Pela and Ben Rogan, while also co-producing themselves.
Wikipedia notes that, as on the debut, much of the album was recorded live, even as studio technology such as sampled drums became part of the process. That combination helps explain its feel: immaculate, but never sterile.
“The Sweetest Taboo” became the most prominent single, reaching number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on that chart for six months. “Is It a Crime?” is more expansive, allowing Stuart Matthewman’s saxophone and the band’s measured dynamics to frame one of Adu’s most dramatic vocals, while “Jezebel” shows how effectively the group can build narrative atmosphere without over-arranging. Adu wrote all of the album’s lyrics apart from the instrumental “Punch Drunk”, and the title itself came from a letter in which her father referred to the “promise of hope” in recovering from cancer.
Released on 4 November 1985 in the UK, Promise reached number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, the band’s first album to top either. Its commercial scale never disturbs its composure. The bass, keyboards, saxophone and percussion are given room to breathe, and the emotional temperature stays deliberately controlled. That is the album’s great seduction: the more elegantly Sade withhold, the more closely you listen for everything happening underneath.
