Planet Her

Released on 25 June 2021 via Kemosabe and RCA Records, Planet Her is Doja Cat’s third studio album and a testament to her genre-defying artistry. Named after a fictional intergalactic utopia, the album seamlessly blends pop, hip hop, and R&B, exploring themes of femininity, solitude, love, and sexuality.

The star-studded tracklist boasts features from Young Thug, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, JID, and SZA, with additional appearances by Eve and Gunna on the deluxe edition. Doja, alongside executive producer Yeti Beats, collaborated with an impressive roster of producers, including Al Shux, Rogét Chahayed, and Aaron Bow, to create a soundscape both lush and captivating.

Singles like “Kiss Me More” and “You Right” catapulted the album to global acclaim, with all five charting tracks landing in the US Billboard Hot 100’s top 20. Planet Her conquered charts worldwide, peaking at number one in New Zealand and earning nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2022 Grammys.

The album’s creation reflects Doja Cat’s evolution as an artist. Much of it was written during a Hawaiian retreat in 2019 and recorded under pandemic constraints, highlighting her hands-on approach to vocal production. Tracks like “Woman” and “Love to Dream” exude precision and creative flair, affirming her commitment to pushing boundaries.

Visually, Planet Her is just as striking. Inspired by the “lush looks” of exoplanet TOI 1338b, Doja imagines a harmonious space where all species coexist. This vision is brought to life in David LaChapelle’s ethereal album cover, which features Doja suspended in a cosmic tableau.

Critics praised the record’s sonic versatility and its ability to marry Afrofuturism with mainstream pop aesthetics. While Doja herself has since called the album “mediocre pop,” it undeniably captures her bold experimentation and knack for crafting infectious, otherworldly hits.
