Our Love

The seventh studio album by Canadian musician Dan Snaith, under the moniker Caribou, “Our Love” was released on 6 October 2014 by City Slang and on 7 October 2014 by Merge. This marks his fourth album as Caribou, with his previous album, “Jiaolong” (2012), released under the name Daphni. The album includes collaborations with Jessy Lanza and Owen Pallett.

“Our Love” reflects on the success of Snaith’s breakthrough album “Swim” from 2010. It features more personal and reflective lyrics influenced by the birth of Snaith’s daughter. The album is characterised by its electronic sound with R&B and hip hop influences. Snaith described the album as aiming to be inclusive and generous, rather than being a solitary studio project. The album’s first single, “Can’t Do Without You,” was released on 3 June 2014, followed by the title track, “Our Love,” on 18 August 2014. A music video for “Our Love,” directed by Ryan Staake, was released on 7 October 2014.

The album debuted to critical acclaim, with praise for its composition and thematic depth. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards and was shortlisted for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize. “Our Love” peaked at number 46 on the Billboard 200 and number 8 on the UK Albums Chart.

Notable reviews included Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, who described the album as “rich, strange, endlessly fascinating music” and “a subtle, beautiful triumph.” Pitchfork’s Jamieson Cox highlighted its “unconventional, austere arrangements” and “thematic consistency.” Fred Thomas of AllMusic noted it as the “most straightforwardly danceable Caribou album to date,” maintaining the project’s unique sound world. Drowned in Sound praised its rich texture and human quality despite being predominantly electronic.
