“Nirvana” is a compilation album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on 29 October 2002. It serves as the third posthumous release following the death of lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994.

Featuring tracks from Nirvana’s studio albums “Bleach,” “Nevermind,” and “In Utero,” as well as their live album “MTV Unplugged in New York,” the compilation also includes the previously unreleased song “You Know You’re Right,” recorded during Nirvana’s final studio session in 1994. Notable additions to the compilation are a version of “Been a Son” previously available only on a UK limited release and the Scott Litt remix of “Pennyroyal Tea.”

Upon its release, “Nirvana” debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 234,000 copies. It has since sold over one million copies in the United States and two million copies in Europe as of 2007.

The album’s release followed the resolution of a longstanding legal dispute between Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, and surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. The dispute primarily revolved around the song “You Know You’re Right,” which Love blocked from being released and led to a legal battle over control of Nirvana’s legacy. Ultimately, the settlement paved the way for the song’s inclusion on the compilation album.

The album’s tracklist opens with “You Know You’re Right” and features a chronological arrangement of Nirvana’s discography, with notable inclusions like “About a Girl,” “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “Lithium,” and “In Bloom” from “Nevermind.” Additionally, songs from “In Utero” such as “Heart-Shaped Box,” “Pennyroyal Tea,” “Rape Me,” and “Dumb” are featured. The album also includes tracks from the MTV Unplugged performance, such as “All Apologies” and “The Man Who Sold the World.”

Liner notes for the album were provided by music journalist David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine.

Following the album’s release, Cobain’s published Journals debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for non-fiction, with the simultaneous release of “Nirvana” contributing to cross-promotion and retail success.
