Night Gnomes

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have long been one of the most electrifying forces in Australia’s psych-rock landscape, and Night Gnomes feels like the moment where they truly stretch their wings. Where 2021’s SHYGA! doubled down on raw, heavy immediacy, Night Gnomes pushes outward — more ambitious, more varied, and ultimately one of the band’s finest records to date.

From the opening moments of Terminus, The Creator, it’s clear PPC aren’t content to stick to the script. What begins with swirling synths, delayed vocal fragments and warped effects unfolds into a sludgy, brooding second half — familiar ingredients, perhaps, but reassembled with fresh scale and emotion. That spirit of reinvention threads through the album: Lava Lamp Pisco and Bubblegum Infinity flirt with the band’s trademark fuzzed-out hooks before dissolving into murkier, more hypnotic territory.

If the first half showcases the band’s sharpened craft, the second half dives deeper into abstraction. Tracks like Microwave-Dave and In Dream, Out offer woozy, dreamlike vignettes packed with charm and unexpected colour. And then there’s Slinky / Holy Water — a multi-phase closer that might just be PPC’s finest achievement. It’s maximalist, inventive, and utterly absorbing, ending the album in a glorious, kaleidoscopic climax.

Not every track reaches those heights (Bob Holiday leans a little too comfortably into familiar patterns), but Night Gnomes never feels anything less than invigorating. It’s a bold, thoughtful expansion of the band’s sound — proof that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets aren’t just keeping up in the crowded psych-rock scene, but pushing themselves to thrilling new places.
