My 21st Century Blues

Raye’s My 21st Century Blues isn’t just a debut—it’s a declaration. A long time in the making, the album arrives after years of label interference, creative suppression, and personal battles. Now independent, Raye uses her freedom not to chase hits, but to tell the truth—raw, painful, glorious truth.

From its spoken-word jazz club opener to the gut-punch closer “Fin.”, the album feels like a one-woman show: intimate, theatrical, and defiantly unfiltered. Raye stitches together trip-hop, R&B, blues, house, doo-wop and soul with remarkable dexterity, turning trauma into theatre and protest into performance. It’s fearless in subject matter—addiction, disordered eating, sexual assault—and even more fearless in delivery.

“Ice Cream Man.” might be one of the most courageous songs ever cut to tape, while “Escapism.” crackles with the kind of kinetic energy that turns pain into anthem. Even the darkest themes are given shape and sting through Raye’s stunning vocal control and dynamic production—sometimes stripped bare, sometimes blown wide open.

The back half leans poppier, but never loses edge. “Body Dysmorphia.” stares down societal pressure with brutal clarity; “Worth It.” and “Buss It Down.” bring groove and grace without softening the blows. Her voice, shifting from smoky jazz to full-throated pop, commands every moment.

My 21st Century Blues may be stitched from a patchwork of genres and timelines, but its vision is remarkably cohesive. Every track ends with a full stop—Raye’s way of telling you the story is complete. She’s taken the fragments of a stifled career and made a masterpiece that could only belong to her. Not just a powerful debut, but a hard-won arrival.
