Coldplay’s ninth studio album, “Music of the Spheres” (subtitled Vol I. From Earth with Love), was released on 15th October 2021 by Parlophone in the UK and Atlantic Records in the US. Produced by Max Martin, the album features guest appearances from Selena Gomez, We Are King, Jacob Collier, and BTS, alongside contributions from electronic producer Jon Hopkins.

Marking their second concept album after 2011’s “Mylo Xyloto,” “Music of the Spheres” delves into pop, pop rock, space rock, space music, and ambient influences. Set in a fictional planetary system called The Spheres, each track corresponds to a celestial body within this universe. Lead singer Chris Martin drew inspiration from the Star Wars franchise, envisioning what musicians from across the universe might sound like.

Preceding the album release, singles “Higher Power” and “My Universe” garnered attention, with the latter debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a historic achievement for Coldplay. “Let Somebody Go” followed as the third official single, while other tracks like “Coloratura,” “People of the Pride,” “Biutyful,” and a live version of “Humankind” served as promotional singles.

Reception to “Music of the Spheres” was mixed, with critics highlighting its pop-oriented style. However, “Coloratura” received critical acclaim for its unconventional structure and production. Despite mixed reviews, the album received nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

The album’s concept and fictional universe were conceived as early as 2010, with hints dropped during the release of the band’s 2019 album, “Everyday Life.” Coldplay’s collaboration with Max Martin brought a fresh perspective to their sound, with the album tailored for live performances. Martin used The Spheres as a metaphorical canvas to explore human experiences, emphasising unity and equality across different perspectives.

Artwork for “Music of the Spheres” was created by Pilar Zeta, featuring the fictional planetary system. Inspired by Coldplay’s previous universe for “Mylo Xyloto,” the album’s creative direction included references to their earlier work, further enriching the album’s narrative.
