The title Music for the Masses began as a tongue-in-cheek response to the idea that Depeche Mode should make more commercial music, but the album ended up sounding uncannily suited to larger rooms. Released in 1987, it preserves the group’s taste for dark, private subject matter while giving the music a broader physical scale. Synthesiser lines stretch further, drums hit with greater weight and Martin Gore’s melodies are allowed to become grand without losing their unease. This is not Depeche Mode suddenly chasing stadium rock. It is electronic pop learning how intimacy can survive amplification.

Sessions ran between 1986 and 1987 in Paris, London and Denmark. Daniel Miller, who had been closely involved in producing the band’s earlier work, stepped back after the tensions around Black Celebration and the demands of running Mute. Gareth Jones was also no longer part of the production team. Depeche Mode brought in David Bascombe, known for engineering work including Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and Tears for Fears’ Songs from the Big Chair, while Alan Wilder took an increasingly central role in shaping the record’s production.

“Never Let Me Down Again” is the clearest example of the new scale, built around a huge, repetitive framework that turns Dave Gahan’s vocal into something almost ceremonial. “Strangelove” is sleeker and more teasing, balancing pop immediacy with Gore’s familiar interest in desire and moral complication. “Behind the Wheel” makes repetition feel sensual and mechanical at once, while “Little 15” pulls the energy inward with a more delicate, unsettling arrangement. The album succeeds because these songs inhabit the same world without needing the same tempo.

Music for the Masses became a major step in Depeche Mode’s international expansion, but the music never treats accessibility as simplification. Bascombe’s production and Wilder’s increasingly sophisticated arrangements give small sounds dramatic weight: a sampled texture, a percussion hit or a sustained synth can carry as much emotional information as a chorus. Hear it loud, certainly, but listen closely too. The mass appeal was built from an obsessive attention to detail.
