After twenty-four years of silence, More marks a triumphant, poignant return for Pulp. Released on 6 June 2025 via Rough Trade Records, the album sees Jarvis Cocker and the band’s core line-up — Nick Banks, Candida Doyle, and Mark Webber — find renewed purpose while honouring the memory of bassist Steve Mackey, who passed away in 2023. Fittingly, Mackey’s songwriting credits linger on two tracks, a subtle but touching reminder of his imprint on the band’s legacy.
Produced by James Ford, More balances nostalgia with fresh energy. The record pairs Pulp’s signature wit and melancholy with intricate new textures — courtesy of touring collaborators Andrew McKinney, Emma Smith, Adam Betts, and violist Richard Jones. From the propulsive hooks of lead single Spike Island to the reflective sprawl of A Sunset, More offers moments that feel both comfortingly familiar and quietly adventurous.
Visually, More is just as layered. The cover — a Jarvis Cocker snapshot from a 2024 walk in Iceland, digitally reimagined by Julian House — cleverly nods to the band’s Different Class heyday, blending past and present in typically Pulp fashion.
Critics embraced More wholeheartedly. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart — Pulp’s first chart-topper since This Is Hardcore in 1998 — and earned widespread acclaim, with a Metacritic score of 83 signalling “universal acclaim.”
Ultimately, More doesn’t try to recreate Pulp’s glory days. Instead, it captures a band gracefully evolving, finding new meaning in old shadows, and proving they still have plenty to say.
