In 1968, the influential Summer of Love was sweeping across pop culture and fashion trends. In the UK, many former adherents of the Mod movement from the previous year were embracing the call to ‘get your head together, man’ and dive into the world of ‘progressive’ music. Among them, The Action, one of London’s most esteemed mod bands, underwent a transformation. In late ’68, founding members guitarist Alan King, bassist Mike Evans, and drummer Roger Powell joined forces with pianist Ian Whiteman and former Savoy Brown guitarist Martin Stone to birth a new musical entity – Mighty Baby.

Their eponymous debut album, released in 1969, exuded a potent blend of melody and instrumental prowess. “Egyptian Tomb” encapsulates the essence of their recorded sound. In their live performances, as was customary for many bands of that era, Mighty Baby expanded upon their compositions, with Martin Stone’s guitar solos earning acclaim for their imaginative artistry. They followed this debut with a second album, “A Jug Of Love,” before eventually disbanding.

Martin Stone would go on to form “Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers,” while Alan King would become a member of the pub-rock band “Ace.” This CD reissue combines tracks from their first album with five songs recorded during their time as The Action. The accompanying sleeve notes by John Reed, from Record Collector magazine, provide a detailed account of the journey of one of the standout “head” bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
