By the time Midnight Boom landed on 10 March 2008, The Kills had already built a reputation for their gritty minimalism and deadpan swagger. But their third album, recorded at the Key Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan, doesn’t just refine that aesthetic—it weaponises it. The title itself nods to the witching-hour sessions that birthed it, and fittingly, Midnight Boom bristles with late-night mischief and mechanical desire.

From the moment “U.R.A. Fever” crackles to life, there’s a hypnotic sleaze to the proceedings—Jamie Hince’s drum-machine beats thud with a clipped precision while Alison Mosshart’s vocals hover between seduction and threat. Singles like “Cheap and Cheerful” and “Last Day of Magic” distil the band’s pop instincts without ever losing their edge. Even when they lean into catchiness, they do it with a sneer.

What sets this record apart from its predecessors is its playfulness. There’s an almost cartoonish lurch to tracks like “Sour Cherry”, which later found cult status through TV and film placements, and a sardonic twang to “What New York Used to Be” that feels both nostalgic and mocking. Midnight Boom trades bluesy grit for jittery hooks and jagged restraint, ushering in a colder, more controlled era for the band.

Critics largely agreed. With a Metacritic score of 75, the album was hailed as a confident step forward—less raw, perhaps, but no less potent. It also became the duo’s breakthrough in the U.S., cracking the Billboard 200 and topping the Heatseekers chart. In Europe, it earned a silver certification and charted widely.

Midnight Boom never overstays its welcome. It’s lean, punchy, and slightly unhinged—a post-midnight spiral that finds The Kills embracing their inner pop deviant while still stalking the shadows.
