Messy is a debut that feels anything but. Across twelve tightly constructed tracks, Olivia Dean sketches love, longing and self-reflection with the confidence of someone years into their career. Released on 30 June 2023, the album landed at number four on the UK Albums Chart, earned a Mercury Prize shortlist nod, and went silver with the BPI — all in the space of a few months.
Dean balances mainstream polish with just enough grit to keep things intriguing. Her voice remains front and centre, emotionally grounded yet agile, and the production sits comfortably in the contemporary soul pocket, occasionally stepping into bolder textures. There are echoes of Amy, Corinne and Lianne La Havas, but Dean doesn’t mimic. She filters her influences through a quietly assertive lens.
Critics were quick to highlight her range. The Line of Best Fit called her “the master of versatility” while Clash praised the album’s precision and breadth. Even The Guardian, though slightly sceptical of its neo-soul leanings, acknowledged the promise of riskier territory.
What Messy offers isn’t reinvention — it’s poise. It’s a debut that knows its lane and drives it well, occasionally hinting at a wilder detour ahead. Dean sounds ready for it.
