“Mama’s Gun” is the second studio album by American singer Erykah Badu. Recorded between 1999 and 2000 at Electric Lady Studios in New York, the album was released on 21 November 2000, by Motown Records. Falling into the neo-soul genre, “Mama’s Gun” weaves together elements of funk, soul, and jazz. Badu’s confessional lyrics delve into themes of insecurity, personal relationships, and societal concerns. Critically, the album has been likened to D’Angelo’s “Voodoo,” sharing a similar musical style and direction, with Badu’s work being seen as more direct and subjective than her debut album, “Baduizm.”

The standout single, “Bag Lady,” marked Badu’s first top 10 Billboard hit and earned Grammy nominations for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. Another track, “Didn’t Cha Know?,” also received a Grammy nod for Best R&B Song. The album boasts substantial contributions from members of the Soulquarians, a collective to which Badu belonged. Noteworthy guests include soul singer Betty Wright and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

While “Mama’s Gun” received positive reviews from critics, it didn’t achieve the same commercial success as “Baduizm,” securing Platinum certification in the US. Rolling Stone magazine recognized it as one of the Top 10 Albums of 2000.
