Venna’s last few years have been defined by motion – relentless touring, fleeting returns home to London, and the quietly formative experience of being the youngest musician in most rooms he entered. That whirlwind sharpened both his voice and his ambition. In naming the album MALIK, he leans into a deeper personal history. It’s the name his mother gave him at birth – meaning king or leader in Arabic – and here it becomes a guiding principle for his first full-length statement.

The record is rich with voices and textures. Jorja Smith, Cari, Leon Thomas, Smino, MIKE and Venna himself all drift in and out of its atmosphere, while an extensive cast of musicians – including Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox, AoD, J Warner, Marco Bernardis and longtime creative partner Yussef Dayes – help stretch its palette far beyond any single genre.

Venna’s background across scenes is unmistakable. His saxophone has coloured the work of Burna Boy, Beyoncé, Kali Uchis, Wizkid, Knucks and J Hus, and that versatility radiates through MALIK. There are flashes of jazz, of course, but also bossa nova warmth, R&B softness, soul harmonies and rap’s rhythmic pulse. Rather than narrowing his focus, Venna treats genre as something permeable.

He describes himself as a vessel, guided by instinct and something more spiritual – a “stream of consciousness” that shapes his playing, producing, singing and direction within the room. That sense of openness gives MALIK its looseness and its light; nothing feels forced or over-rehearsed.
